So I've never done a telephone broadcast, I've never done a two author show, I've never been on a podcast, and I've never done a show that can be heard anywhere in the world. Oh, and for the first time the interview will be available to listen to anytime after the initial broadcast. So I'm both excited for this opportunity and anxious; after all what could possibly go wrong? All the traditional worries are still there: laryngitis, forgetting the names of your characters, etc. but now we can add power outage, a phone outage, a jackhammer in the ally, a surprise group of visitors? The possibilities for disaster seem unlimited.
You might find it interesting how this came about. It started at the Public Safety Writers Association Conference in Las Vegas in July. I had joined the PSWA a couple of months before the conference, I didn't know anybody there so I sat in an empty chair between between strangers. The man to my left was a detective who has written both fiction and non-fiction books, and is a consultant and trainer for agencies across the country. The lady to my right was Barbara Hodges; it turned out she is a prolifict writer and award winning author in multiple genres, and does author interviews for Red River Radio. As the conference progessed we became acquainted and in random conversation between presentations she learned I wrote with rural Arizona as my setting. The conversation went something like this:
Barbara said, "Oh I went to high school in a small town in Arizona; do you know where Miami is?"
"That's my home town. I was born there and graduated from Miami High School."
Needless to say we were both surprised to find a fellow Miami Vandal so randomly. She explained that she only attended for a few months before her family moved away, but she still had cousins there, and of course I knew them as well. She bought my books, which I thought was just great.
Later, she contacted me and invited me to participate as a guest blogger, which I was happy to do (You can see "Meet One of My Characters..." in the blog list below.) And after that she invited me to be interviewed on her radio show. So I'm excited to be able to put my book out in front of new potential readers, and maybe get to visit a little with some of my existing readers. I'm sure glad I sat where I did at PSWA.
Barbara is the author or co-author of eight novels. When she is not writing she enjoys going to and watching NASCAR on television as well as decorative painting.
